Blue Hill Country Garden     Autumn Color

Autumn Color - Fall Color in the Landscape

Put some Fall color - Autumn color in to your home landscapes with trees and shrubs. Sizes given are approximate. Most can be trimmed to a smaller more compact size if desired. Consider also that Evergreen Trees and Shrubs have color all year long. Some of these "evergreens" are actually blue or gold or shades of aqua blue all the time ! Here in the north the evergreens can change slightly in shade during the coldest portion of the year but all retain their foliage {needles} year long. Sometimes the color changes are strikingly beautiful. A good example of this is the "Mother Lode" juniper which is gold year round then shows shades of pink and orange on it's tips beginning shortly after the first frost.
Even after the brilliant colors of the Maple, Ash and Birch trees have faded there's still lots more Autmnal Color to be enjoyed ! Bittersweet Vines are displaying bright yellow leaves that will soon yield to yellow Honeysuckle vines continue to bloom offering shades of pink and scarlet.
Blueberries and Burning Bushes add their dark red color to the pallet and the leaves of the Korean Spice Bush are a luxurious soft orange. Barberery and Cotoneaster leaves are a bright red. After the leaves are shed thier orange - red berries persist. Small birds will snack on these as they ripen. Flowering Crabapples add even more color with thier cheerful fruits of red and yellow.
Rose leaves in Autumn, turn to shimmering shades of yellow orange and scarlet, contrasting nicely with the red and orange hip. Peony leaves are purple. The annual varieities of Artemesias like Dusty Miller are still a beautiful silver. The bi-annual Lambs Ears stays a soft silver green. Perennial sedums are putting on a show of thier own with flowers in changing shades of rose, purple and rust.
As leaves continue to fall our eyes are drawn once again to the endearing and enduring conifers. Also known as evergreens the conifers are the backbone of the home landscape offering year round color and interest. Conifers are the number one choice for framing a building in a foundation planting. As screens and specimen plantings they are ideal. a group planting of evergreens in your yard gives winter shelter to birds and squirrels and adds year round viewing enjoyment for yourself.
