Balsam Fir
Evergreen Tree

Balsam Fir evergreen trees are used extensively but not exclusively as Christmas trees. For that use they are usually pruned for six to seven years before harvest. Balsam is easily trimmed and makes a nice landscape tree. Balsam Fir is a large growing tree even when trimmed, it should not be planted too close to buildings, but set apart from or use it in a wooded or forest type landscape. When allowed to grow the mature size of this evergreen tree is approximately sixty feet tall.
Balsam Fir is the one of the sweetest smelling evergreen trees in the Maine woods. On a warm afternoon the scent of Balsam permeates the air. Mature Balsam Fir evergreen trees are harvested to cut into stud wood. When planned for use as Christmas trees Balsams are heavily pruned yearly and harvested at seven to eight years old. Balsam Firs can be trimmed to used as landscape evergreens in the home yard. The cone is very small and not long lasting, seldom noticed on even an older tree. The finger like tips of this evergreen tree are gathered to make into Christmas wreaths in November and December. The dried needles of Balsam Fir are used to fill fragrance pillows and door draft stoppers. It has a clean smell that is appreciated any time of the year.
